effect of surface treatments on shear bond strength of denture teeth to denture base resins
Authors
abstract
background: debonding of denture teeth from denture bases is the most common failure in removable dentures. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatments on shear bond strength of denture teeth to heat-polymerized and autopolymerized denture base resins. materials and methods: in this experimental in vitro study, 60 maxillary central incisor acrylic teeth were divided into two groups. group m was polymerized with heat-polymerized acrylic resin (meliodent) by compression molding technique and group f was processed by autopolymerized acrylic resin (futura gen) by injection molding technique. within each group, specimens were divided into three subgroups according to the teeth surface treatments ( n = 10): (1) ground surface as the control group (m1 and f1), (2) ground surface combined with monomer application (m2 and f2), and (3) airborne particle abrasion by 50 μm al2o3 (m3 and f3). the shear bond strengths of the specimens were tested by universal testing machine with crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (anova) and tukey’s honestly signifi cant difference (hsd) tests ( p < 0.05). results: the mean shear bond strengths of the studied groups were 96.40 ± 14.01, 124.70 ± 15.64, and 118 ± 16.38 n for m1, m2, and m3 and 87.90 ± 13.48, 117 ± 13.88, and 109.70 ± 13.78 n for f1, f2, and f3, respectively. the surface treatment of the denture teeth signifi cantly affected their shear bond strengths to the both the denture base resins ( p < 0.001). however, there were no signifi cant differences between the groups treated by monomer or airborne particle abrasion ( p = 0.29). the highest percentage of failure mode was mixed in meliodent and adhesive in futura gen. conclusion: monomer application and airborne particle abrasion of the ridge lap area of the denture teeth improved their shear bond strengths to the denture base resins regardless of the type of polymerization. key words: acrylic resin, dental bonding, denture bases

Shear Bond Strength of Acrylic Denture Teeth to PMMA and Polyamide Denture Base Materials
Introduction: Detachment of denture teeth from denture base is one of the most common reasons for costly denture repairs .This study aimed at evaluating the bond strength of an acrylic denture tooth to polyamide injection-molded thermoplastic denture base material compared with three conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) denture base resins. Materials and Method: A total of 40 acrylic dent...
full textThe effect of chemical surface treatments of different denture base resins on the shear bond strength of denture repair.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Fracture of a repaired denture base often occurs at the junction of the base and repair materials rather than within these materials. PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to evaluate the shear bond strengths of 4 denture base acrylic resins following the use of 3 chemical solvents and to examine treated acrylic resin surfaces under a field emission scanning electron micro...
full textEffect of potentially chromogenic beverages on shear bond strength of acrylic denture teeth to heat-polymerized denture base resins
BACKGROUND Detachment of denture acrylic resin artificial teeth from denture base resin is one of the most common problems presented by denture wearers. PURPOSE This study investigated the shear bond strength (SBS) and fracture type of bonding interface of two commercial acrylic teeth (Vipi Dent Plus e Biolux) to two denture base resins (Vipi Cril e Lucitone 550) after immersion in potentiall...
full textEffect of ridge lap surface treatment and thermocycling on microtensile bond strength of acrylic teeth to denture base resins.
This study evaluated the effect of denture base polymer type (heat- and microwave-polymerized), ridge lap surface treatment (with and without methyl methacrylate-MMA etching) and thermocycling on the microtensile bond strength (microTBS) of Biotone acrylic teeth. Flat-ground, ridge-lap surface of posterior artificial teeth were bonded to cylinders of each denture base resin, resulting in the fo...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Acrylic resin ruled the dental profession for 60 years, and this success is attributed to its aesthetics, handling properties, physical and biological compatibility, its stability in oral environment and its cost effectiveness. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the bond strength of acrylic resin teeth treated with various conditioning materials lik...
full textEffect of surface treatments on the bond strength of different resin teeth to complete denture base material.
Although different commercial brands of artificial teeth are available in the market, debonding from the denture base is still an issue when rehabilitating edentulous patients with conventional or implant-supported complete dentures. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of surface treatments on the bond strength of four artificial teeth brands to a denture base material polym...
